New Year's Resolution - Bring Back Balance

The key to a healthy, happy life? Keeping everything balanced.

Everything in moderation…including moderation.

We’re 11 days into the new year…which is around about the time that those pesky resolutions start going awry, but not this year! This year, we are throwing out the ridiculously unrealistic goals and settling for small, simple decisions, guaranteed to make life better in the easiest way possible. The first? Living a more balanced life.

We would all like to be a little fitter and healthier – the key? Eating a balanced diet, full of foods which do you good, and for us, this means including (in moderation) foods which make you happy. Here at basilico, we’ll be the first to admit that pizza has more calories than grated carrot or celery – but we do make sure to use only the freshest, best produce every time, as well as taking into account the nutritional benefits of each ingredient. So, your Friday night pizza treat can be simply a pleasure – rather than a guilty one.

The Portabella Spinaci – Portabella Mushrooms

It’s the prize ingredient on our Portabella Spinaci – but did you know that mushrooms in generally (and especially portabella) can do you good? All mushrooms are an excellent source of fibres such as chitin and beta-glucan, which have been shown to lower cholesterol, improve cardiovascular health, and provide protection against colds and flu viruses. They are chock-full of vitamins and minerals, including copper, iron, potassium, phosphorus (which the body needs for bone strength) and vitamin C. Portabella mushrooms are also a good source of B vitamins which help with energy production, nervous system function and red blood cell formation.

The Zucca – Butternut Squash

Worried about high blood pressure? The butternut squash on our Pizza Zucca could well be your friend. The high levels of potassium in the squash counteract the effects of sodium in your diet, decreasing blood pressure and helping protect you from issues like heart disease and stroke. Butternut Squash is also really great for your eyes, not only is it loaded with vitamin A, but it has good levels of zeaxanthin and lutein, two antioxidants which can help protect vision. High levels of manganese (along with iron, folate and zinv) help keep your bones strong and one portion has nearly half your daily dose of vitamin C, boosting your immune system and keeping your skin healthy.

The Pollo Tricolore – Feta Cheese

We have long been taught that cheese is one of the less good foods for your health- but not all cheeses are the same! Feta – made from sheep or goat’s milk – is a nutrient-rich option which is lower in fat and calories, but high in protein. As might be expected of a dairy product, it is a rich source of calcium which supports bone health and can even protect against certain cancers, when combined with vitamin D. Feta also contains Vitamin B6 and the protein histidine, which combine to form histamine – an important part of the inflammatory process which, in small degrees, is what allows our immune system to fight disease. On top of all this, feta can aid gut health with its probiotics, help treat anaemia with vitamin B12 and both prevent headaches and protect eyesight with vitamin B2, riboflavin.

The Vegetarian – Aubergine

Finally, our Vegetarian pizza is covered with health-boosting vegetables, including the wonderful aubergine. A fantastic source of dietary fibre, aubergine also has high levels of helpful vitamins and minerals, including potassium, copper, magnesium, manganese, and vitamins B1 and B6. It is rich in antioxidants, including one called nasunin which is vital in protecting the lipids in brain cell membranes. These lipids let nutrients in, waste out, and receive instructions from messenger molecules, protecting the braincell and helping it function. Last of all, aubergines have the potential to lower LDL or “bad” cholesterol levels.

SO, this year’s resolution – don’t cut out food groups or deprive yourself! Fill your diet with fresh produce which will make your body healthier, not just thinner. And, when you feel you deserve a treat? Make it a Basilico treat.
