La Dolce Vita- Infuse a Little Italian into your Life

Here at Basilico, woodfired pizza delivery, our ethos is based around creating great quality, authentic Italian food. In our last post we focussed on how, we believe, pizza is a staple food of a healthy Mediterranean diet. However, there is more to this lifestyle than food that makes it so healthy and, with this in mind, we have explored London to discover other ways that you can channel a little inner Italian to be kind to your body and mind this month!

Credit Suisse Exhibition: Michelangelo and Sebastiano

Alongside food, art is one of Italy's most celebrated products. From the 15th March until 25th June the National Gallery will be paying homage to two of Italy's greatest Renaissance masters, Michelangelo and Sebasitano del Piombo, and their 25 year long friendship and partnership. On display will be some of the beautiful works that were produced during this collaboration which began in Rome in 1511. The exhibition will display a collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures and written correspondence which chronicle the shared creative achievements of these two men.

Estorik Collection

As well as temporary Italian exhibitions popping up in London all the time, the borough of Islington is home to a permanent collection of Modern Italian art, the only one in Britain. Internationally known for its focus on Futuristic art, the Estorik collection contains pieces dating from 1890 to the 1950s, including works from such notable artists as Umberto Boccioni and Emilio Greco.

Italian Cinema Club

If you prefer your entertainment a little more modern, London has that covered too. In 2014 the Italian Cinema Club was established by Clara Caleo Green as a means of screening contemporary Italian films that are otherwise not distributed in the UK. The club, based in the Regent Street Cinema, has three screenings a month, which are followed with Q&A sessions with some of Italy's most talented people in film. To make this an even more enticing outing, after the session, viewers are invited to a taste a selection of Italy's best foods and wines.

Mercato Metropolitano

Speaking of food and wine, Italian produce has been brought to Newington Causeway in the form of the company Mercato Metropolitano. With values similar to those at Basilico, based on a sense of community, quality and social responsibility, this market specialises in small-scale artisan producers from all over Italy, as well as providing food from the UK, India, Germany, and France. On top of being a vendor of high quality authentic Italian products, MM also holds education and cultural events, such as music performances, a cinema, and an urban gardening area where people can learn about growing their own produce in the busy metropolis of London.

So there you have it. London is full of activities to help you infuse a little healthy and happy Mediterranean style into your own life.
